LEWISTON SCHOOLS STRING PROGRAM

LEWISTON, MAINE

Students in the Lewiston Public Schools can learn a string instrument
beginning in grade four. At the elementary level lessons on violin, viola
and cello take place in small groups during the school day, one half hour
weekly. Some rehearsals are held after school before concerts. Students
either rent an appropriately-sized instrument from local businesses,
borrow from a limited number of school instruments, or provide their own.
The lessons themselves are free, but there are occasional costs for music books and special festivals.

Strings continue at the middle school, during one study hall per week, and
after school for several weeks before each concert. Bass becomes available
at this phase. At the high school, strings meet under the direction of Linda Vallaincourt every Wednesday from 2:00-3:30.

move on his cello
sounding like a saw.
Though I listen hard,
trying to hear the song
he's actually playing.
When it's time
to go, I still hear
violin music
drifting in my head
